He might be a green giant, but the Incredible Hulk has more in common with a wrecking ball than a bag of frozen peas. In the words of the mutant scientist himself, “Hulk Smash!” All the way through the game.
You might get the impression that Ultimate Destruction takes a leaf or two out of the old videogame classic Rampage’s book, what with all the smashing up of buildings, tanks, and jeeps…And you would be right. But that’s no bad thing because Radical Entertainment has done a great job putting a lot of original thought into this comic book romp.
The action is constant and seriously fast-paced – if you know the comics / TV series / film you’ll know that the army will do anything to take down the radioactive mountain of muscle. And it doesn’t stop at shooting big guns at him.
If you come under too much fire from the police, gunships, commandos in huge cybernetic armour suits, then you can launch yourself at the nearest sky scraper and smash your way out of there in a jiffy.
The fun doesn’t stop there. The demolition escalates with increasingly difficult missions to complete and some frankly inspired mini-games like baseball, crazy golf and surfing – using architecture, buses, and whatever else comes to your big green hands.
Like Grand Theft Auto, the whole city is your playground – but when you can jump buildings and out-run a helicopter, you realise that the graphics are streaming pretty darn quickly off that disk. The sheer level of destruction going on can sometimes cause the screen to get a bit jittery, but it’s forgivable considering the amount of explosions and 3D cleverness that are flying around.
So check your brain in at the door and go break some stuff.
