2box announce new DrumIt Five electronic kit and drum brain: Clavia DDrum lovers rejoice! PDF Print E-mail

Digg!

When Clavia dropped the ball with their DDrum brand, e-drummers across the nation shedded real, salty tears. We've battled long and hard with that slightly clunky DDrum 4 Midi interface to get our favourite kits well optimised and sitting happily in 8Mb of RAM. Yeah, 8Mb! My pants have more RAM than that.

Anyway, it's been a long time coming, but the patter of tiny paradiddles can be heard in the DDrum family house. A Swedish outfit of musical instrument engineers (including some original Clavia talent) called 2box have picked up the shattered pieces of the best electronic drums money could buy, and they've listened to the needs of the DDrum community. Behold... The DrumIT Five electronic percussion e-drum kit of power:

2box has obviously kept the DDrum spirit alive with the styling of the DrumIt Five e-drum kit. It's got vivid orange and black (danger!) colours reminiscent of the DDrum family, and looks to have the same rugged build quality.

Let's face it, the main thing existing DDrum owners and potential buyers are going to be thinking is how does it sound? Well I've got to admit, I'm going on the press release at this point in time and I've yet to get my hands on one, but it looks like 2box have been listening to DDrummers' suggestions and gripes, and have pumped that brain full of an impressive spec:

â–º
10 dual-function trigger inputs
â–ºlow latency trigger interface
â–º6 mono line out + stereo headphone out
â–ºstereo audio in
â–º128 user editable kits
â–ºUSB interface + PC / Mac virtual kit manager
â–ºproprietary lossless compression format
â–º24bit sound playback

The editor software for Mac and PC is very interesting. You'll be able to arrange kits by dragging sounds onto virtual pads, and in a later revision (a free update to registered users I hope), you'll be able to play with the mix of the multi-layered, multi-channel drum samples. A bespoke VST plug-in should make it possible to add an extra channel to the existing factory sound or custom sounds.

A feature welcomed by DDrum owners will be the ability to tweak the mix between direct, overhead and ambient mics, and add an extra channel for special effects. Not only that but create custom multi-layered sounds from Wave, AIFF or Rex files.

Hold up, from Rex files? This is genius. Grab yourself some classic breakbeats, solos, whatever, and within a couple of clicks you'll be thinking you're Buddy Rich, Clyde Stubblefield, Will Calhoun, dare I say it Jon Bonham? I'm frothing at the gash here.

The DrumIt  kit comes with a newly developed lightweight rack stand. The pads range from 8” to 14” and comprise both Head and Rim sensors - this is a feature I really also like about the Roland V-drums. Coupled with mesh heads, it makes for a much less noisy practise experience. My wife really wouldn't miss the noise of my old cast aluminium shells and old-skool heads. Or the clack of the rims.

Three different sized cymbals are on offer, each with three playing zones - Bell, Ride and Edge (which can be choked). They've got the swing of regular cymbals when you twat them (one of my only gripes about DDrum 4's cymbals - and it's a minor one at that). These've got a special rubber coating to reduce the acoustic noise but still offer good rebound.

If you're lucky enough to be at the Namm show 2008, I very much urge you to visit 2Box at stand D 2430. I'm considering selling my family in order to fund a trip over there just to get the first sighting of these puppies.

Check out www.2box.se for more information, but all this is hot off the presses from the helpful chaps at 2box (thanks Bengt!). I'm hoping to get more specs about this percussive wonder of electrickbeatery too - details on the RAM, perhaps some software screenshots, so do check back at some point.

If you've read to the end of this with a big dumb grin on your face, then you're no doubt as excited as I am. Early reports from Namm suggest that there are one or two bugs to be ironed out as the kit hasn't gone into full production yet, but roll on Spring 2008 - when this robotic percussion sexbeast is set to hit the shops.

Here, get your eyes and ears around this pre-production kit, and the man Bengt himself...
